I teach Reception and Year 1 at a primary school in Sheffield and I have been doing it for eight years. Before I trained as a teacher I worked in a bookshop for three years, which is probably why I am so obsessed with getting young readers started early. Most of my worksheets are phonics, early reading, and the sort of basic maths activities that work well for four- and five-year-olds who would rather be outside poking sticks into mud. I try to keep things short and a bit playful because honestly, if I am bored making it, my class will be bored doing it. I did my PGCE at Leeds and picked up an interest in how young children learn through structured play. I still read a lot of the research around that, though half my best ideas come from watching what happens when the class thinks I am not looking. I also bake a frankly unreasonable amount of banana bread.
