Purpose & benefits

Digraphs trip up more kids than any other phonics concept. Two letters making one sound is not intuitive. Students need lots of exposure before it clicks.

This digraph worksheet gives Kindergarten and Grade 1 students focused practice with the key consonant digraphs: sh, ch, th, wh, and ph. Teachers use it during phonics blocks. Homeschool families use it as part of daily reading instruction.

How to use this worksheet

Say each digraph out loud together before starting. Emphasise that these two letters make just one sound. Have your child read the sample words with you, then let them work through the activity independently. If they mix up sh and ch, practise those separately before combining them again.

💡 Tip: Sit with your child during the first few questions to make sure they understand the instructions, then let them work independently.

About this worksheet

Digraphs are a phonics essential

Once students know their individual letter sounds, digraphs are the next big challenge. Sh, ch, th, wh, and ph each make one sound from two letters. Kids need explicit instruction and repeated practice to internalise them, and this worksheet gives them exactly that.

Aligned with US Common Core Kindergarten and Grade 1 phonics standards and UK KS1 phonics. Teachers can use it during phonics blocks, small group instruction, or as homework. Homeschool families use it for daily phonics practice. Pair with a phonics sound chart on the wall so students have a visual reference during independent work.
